Friday would have been Martin's 81st birthday. It will be celebrated on the third Monday in January - January 18th.

Death Penalty

"Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrats Brian Moran and Creigh Deeds favor expanding capital punishment by scrapping the triggerman rule" - http://voices.washingtonpost.com/rawfisher/2009/01/maryland_virginia_go_...

"Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, of Bath County, said he disagrees with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that makes it unconstitutional for states to execute juveniles, but he said he would abide by that decision if elected."  http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-131100056.html

Bob McDonnell, "In a civilized society there's probably a place for an ongoing dialogue about that issue and whether it's fair and just and consistent with good public policy to execute people under age 18." http://sicsempertyrannis.blogspot.com/2004/12/more-on-death-penalty.html

Percy Levar Walton - http://www.vadp.org/cases/walton.htm http://www.internationaljusticeproject.org/illnessPWalton.cfm

Bob McDonnell - “Governor Kaine is within his authority under the Virginia Constitution to grant clemency when the ends of justice require it. Under the law, a person who is mentally incompetent may not be executed. Walton’s mental health status was fully adjudicated in multiple courts. Each concluded that he is not incompetent or mentally retarded. The United States Supreme Court denied Walton’s petition in which he argued that he is incompetent and requested that his execution be stayed.

Cold Logic

"I think we're in a methamphetamine epidemic here," Galax police Chief R.C. Clark said. "This is a distribution point. There is cultural support. There are other people who speak Spanish." "I still desperately need someone who speaks the language and is also adept in the culture of diversity," Clark said.

Right now, Galax has no officers fluent in Spanish and cannot hire any because larger departments are willing to offer much higher pay, Clark said. Some officers are taking language lessons.

Last year, two Mexican men were found shot to death along a logging road in Grayson County. Both were illegal immigrants, authorities said, and their deaths are thought to have been connected to drug dealing. The man suspected of shooting the two also is Mexican, and is thought to have returned to that country, Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan said.

"Cartels tend to swim in the ocean of illegal aliens," said George Grayson, a professor of government at the College of William and Mary who has written extensively about U.S.-Mexico relations.

He did not find it surprising that Galax and other small towns across the country with high concentrations of Hispanic residents would become beachheads in the cartels' push to expand their trafficking northward.

"Often the cartels will use smaller towns ... as an area of operations because typically the law enforcement agencies don't have the resources to deal with the underworld characters," Grayson said.

These and other "inferences" are repeated at the website - http://bitterqueen.typepad.com - dedicated to the "History of Gay Bars in New York City" "Get the Mafia out of Gay Bars".

In an article at http://roanoke.com/ featuring Megan Brown, "Her own suppliers and, from what she could tell, their suppliers, had not been Latino."

Alison Flinchum in a

response

to the Roanoke Times article said "This article could have been greater, but chose to cater to the fear of a region."

In the face of this sort of logic, I recommend a tamale from "La Tapatia" on East Grayson St. in Galax.

Getting to know the terrorists

It is important to put a face on the terrorists. If we are going to spend $3,000,000,000,000, potentially destroying the US Economy, making us safe from these individuals we ought to get to know a few.

One of them is a guest of the State of Virginia in the Northern Neck Regional Jail - Sami Al Arian. Upon his arrest in 2003, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced a major victory in the "war against terrorism". After a prosecution costing $50,000,000 resulting in zero convictions, the Department of Justice secured a plea bargain agreement which would result in Sami's deportation.

He is still here.

George Ryan goes to Oxford (Wisconsin)

Sabbath Work

I have a soft spot in my head and heart for George Ryan. He recently arrived (November 7th) at Oxford Prison, convicted of corruption (the evidence is considerable even though the principal prosecution witness said he had his head in a vise). Oxford was built during my residence in Adams County Wisconsin in the 70s.
