Email

Be careful where you click

Normally Gmail filters this sort of thing:

Danger/Microsoft

Danger, a Microsoft subsidiary, may have lost all the contact data for 800,000 T-Mobile customers. That is because that data was stored on servers and not in the devices. That is also true of GMail and your computer too.

To back up the contacts on GMail I did the following:

  • I went to GMail - http://mail.google.com/a/ls.net/ and logged in
  • Next I clicked Contacts
  • Once my contacts page loaded I clicked Export
  • Then I chose "Everyone" and "Outlook CSV Format"
  • Finally I clicked "Export" and saved the output to my hard disk.

I'll put that data in a folder I backup to a USB drive and copy it to my laptop.

Once a month is not too often, once a week would be better.

Sometimes there is an explanation

in

Portal of Miracles

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Don't be afraid that your life will end,
be afraid that it will never begin.

Gmail - Thunderbird - Enigma

This won't dispose of the need to scan your spam folder through the Gmail interface periodically but it will circumvent performance issues.

Gmail woes

There are times when GMail does not perform adequately. There are many possible reasons. This list is not exhaustive nor is it guaranteed to resolve any particular issue.

Compulsive Forwarders

I get mostly two kinds of email: spam, and messages that look like this:

FWD: YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS ITS SO CUTE!!!!!!!
FWD: SIGN THIS PETITION OR BIBLE ILLEGAL!!!!!!
FWD: DONT DELETE THIS ONE!!!!!! KITTENS!!!!!!!
FWD: JESUS COMING NEXT FRIDAY 3:23 PACIFIC STANDARD TIME!!!!!!!

Lousy grammar and punctuation aside, I hate these. Honestly. I hate them worse than spam, because there is an outside chance that I may have won a $100 Macy’s gift card out of the blue, even though I’ve never darkened the door of Macy’s in my life. On the other hand, there is no chance in hell (except in hell, I should say) that the Bible is in danger of being outlawed.

And I’ll bet my kids’ college savings that the Lord will be a no-show on Friday afternoon.

Mailing Lists

Particularly handy if you are sent an email and want to capture the list of email addresses.

  • click "show details"
  • select the list of email addresses by "scooping" with the mouse (carefully positioning the mouse at the starting point, holding down the left button, moving to the ending point, releasing the left mouse button, and type Control-C). Make sure you get just the list of addresses and not stuff around it.
  • click "Contacts"
  • click "Groups"
  • click "Create group"
  • supply a "Group Name"
  • paste the addresses in the "Add contacts" box
  • click "Create Group"

Almost too easy. Neat thing about the method is that if GMail sent it to you, they will accept it in the "Add contacts" box.

GMail - IMAP - Thunderbird

IMAP has arrived for GMail. The neat things about IMAP are folders and synchronization between multiple client machines. N.B. You must use the web based access to train your SPAM filter and to resolve issues. IMAP for GMail is new and there will be bumps. I tried it with Evolution and it was extremely slow. It seems to be working fine with Thunderbird. I don't use Microsoft mail clients. You can download Thunderbird for Windows from here.

Once you are emotionally and intellectual prepared for this "excellent adventure" -

Click Settings on the upper right of your LSNet - GMail page, then Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
