The Ornament: A Musical Drama by Philip Keveren

The Ornament, a wonderful musical drama, by Phillip Keveren, will be presented at Hillcrest Baptist Church this week-end.

The story tells of the Keagan family. Henry Keagan, played by David Swicegood, has recently lost his wife. Henry’s family, played by Courtney Frederick, Seth Criner, Errol Bugh, Chas Parks, Hailey Parks, and Lindsey Nale, have decided to gather together to support Henry during the Christmas season. Ashley Nale, plays Shasta, who is one of Henry’s sons’ girlfriend. The main messages are that, while circumstances in our lives may change, the one constant we can always depend upon is found in the love, grace, and presence of the Lord Jesus and that God is always faithful to lead us through. The choir is made up of the adult choir members and the church’s two older youth groups. The musical selections have some very familiar Christmas carols and some beautiful songs written especially for The Ornament.

The stage director is Jason Criner. The music director is Carolyn Davis. James Spivey, James Parks, Justin Patton and Penny Criner make up the tech crew. The presentations will be in the sanctuary :

Highland Camerata To Present Winter Concerts

The region’s premier chorus, The Highland Camerata, will present its annual set of winter concerts on December 11, 13, and 15. On Friday, December 11 at 7:30 pm, the concert will be held at Brush Creek Hall. Brush Creek Hall, home of the Camerata, is located two miles south of Independence on Rt, 21. Galax Presbyterian Church in Galax will host the Sunday afternoon concert at 3:00 pm, on December 13. On Tuesday, December 15, the concert will be held at the Sparta Presbyterian Church at 7:30 pm. The Camerata has been performing in this area for more than thirty years.

The choir’s director, Mary Elizabeth Whartenby, of Galax has chosen a varied program of sacred and secular pieces. The major work for this set of concerts is the beautiful Mass in G by Franz Schubert. Soloists for this mass will be Becky Helton of Galax, Heather McCall Hanks of Woodlawn, David Hoffman of Independence, Dwight Dunbar and Phillip Parlock of Galax.

Additionally, an African folksong, “African Noel” by Liebergen, a traditional Irish carol, “Wexford Carol” by Warland, a traditional French carol, “Masters in This Hall” by Morris and Hayes will be performed. A favorite composer for Camerata audiences is Stephen Paulus. Several Christmas carols from “A Stephen Paulus Christmas,” as well as some popular secular songs of Christmas from “Christmas Pops Choral Series” arranged by Tenna Chinn will be sung. “How Far is it to Bethlehem” by Shaw and a lovely piece, “This Christmastide” by Fraser will complete the program.

The Highland Camerata is pleased to have a local performer, Larissa Venzie, to perform on the marimba during this Larissa Venzieconcert series. Larissa will play several solo Christmas carols during intermission.

Patty Davis of Galax will accompany the Camerata on the piano and will play the hand bells with Annie Parlock of Galax. Other musicians will be Debbie Brady on the oboe and Jessica Howard on the flute.

FOREVER WILD: A CELEBRATION OF WILDERNESS

One of America’s most unique folksingers and backcountry travelers, Walkin’ Jim Stoltz, on tour from the mountains of Montana, will bring his powerful multi-media show, Forever Wild, to the 1908 Courthouse in Independence, Virginia, on Friday, November 6th, at 7:00 PM.  The mix of stunning photography, stories, and music make this one-of-a-kind concert an inspiring journey into our nation’s last wilderness areas.

Walkin Jim gets his name from nearly 27,000 miles he has walked through the wild country of North America.  Carrying a guitar and writing his songs along the way, his lyrics express a great love and respect for the Earth and the wild places he knows so well.  Known for his powerful baritone and emotion-packed vocals, Stoltz’s Forever Wild show is much more than a concert.  It combines live music and poetry with his own multi-image slides to create a stirring celebration of the natural world.  Stoltz is a veteran of more than 30 years of performing.  In this year’s show he will be sharing images and songs from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, his Yellowstone to Yukon walk, the Utah canyon country, the Northern Rockies, and wild places all across America.

Walkin’ Jim has toured extensively throughout the U.S. for the past 23 years.   In 2006 he organized a 45 state outreach tour with other musicians and authors, and worked with hundreds of community organizations to gain support for clean water, roadless lands, and wildlife.  Jim has been presented with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Outstanding Achievement Award for his sharing of nature and wilderness across America.  Stoltz will have copies of his recent book, “Walking With the Wild Wind” to sign at the event.  His songs from 9 different cds get regular airplay on National Public Radio and will also be available.  Visit his website at www.walkinjim.com.

Joyce Rouse, local song writer and musician, will open for Jim with a newly composed song celebrating the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Tickets ($10.00) for the concert will be available at:

FOR  IMMEDIATE  RELEASE

HIGHLAND CAMERATA GETS READY FOR FALL SESSION

So you think you may want to sing with a regional premier chorus? Now is the time to begin.  The Highland Camerata’s fall rehearsals will begin Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. at Brush Creek Hall near Independence, VA.  This first rehearsal will give new members an opportunity to visit with Camerata regulars and to go over the music.  The Camerata membership comes from Carroll and Grayson counties in Virginia, Ashe and Alleghany counties in North Carolina, and the city of Galax.

As the major work for this season, director, Mary Elizabeth Whartenby, of Galax, Virginia has chosen Schubert’s “Mass in G Major.”  Since we will be in the Holiday season, the Camerata will be rehearsing several carols from “A Stephen Paulus Christmas.”  Members of the chorus and audiences alike have enjoyed Paulus’ works.  Other pieces will be:  “How Far is it to Bethlehem” by Goeffrey Shaw, a spiritual, “Sweet Little Jesus Boy” by Mac Gimsey,  “Wexford Carol” arranged by Dale Warland, a Kenyon folksong, “African Noel”,  “A Merry Christmas” by Warrell, “This Christmastide” by Fraser, and a French carol, “Masters in This Hall.”

“Anyone interested in singing quality choral music is welcome,” said Jerry Ann Hall, president of the Camerata.  “We always start the season with a social hour and refreshments, followed by the first rehearsal of the season’s music.  It’s a great way to see if the Camerata is for you.”  Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Concerts will be held near the beginning of December.

Brush Creek Hall, home of the Highland Camerata, is located between Sparta, NC and Independence, VA, on US Hwy 21, two miles south of Independence.   Persons interested in singing are invited to call Debbie Brady at 336-372-4402 in North Carolina or Jerry Ann Hall in Virginia at 276-728-2158 for further information.  Visit their web site at www.highlandcamerata.org to see what they are all about.
