Conservatory Open House & Fall Registration
Spaces Still Available for Summer Dance Camps at Conservatory
The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre in downtown Galax still has spaces available for boys and girls in its summer dance camps and is currently accepting registrations. The weekly camps run at various times from June 16-August 1.
The Conservatory is offering:
- Petite Princess Camps (Ages 3-4),
- Tiaras, Tutus and a Prince (Ages 5-6),
- Intro to Dance (Ages 9-14),
- Dances Around the World (Ages 7-9),
- “Kids Rock” Camp featuring music by Hannah Montana and High School Musical (Ages 5-7),
- “Pop Star” Camp includes a DVD of each student (Ages 8-10),
- Musical Theater Workshop “Hairspray”(Ages 10+) and Ballet Intensives (all levels).

Cats Dance Musical at Rex Theater

GALAX, Va. (April 2008) The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre and the Galax Theatre Guild will perform an amateur version of the dance musical Cats Saturday, May 3 (2:00pm), Sunday, May 4 (3:00pm), Saturday, May 10 (6:00pm) and Sunday, May 11 (3:00pm) at the Rex Theater in downtown Galax.
The production will feature dancers from the Conservatory as well as vocalists from the area.
Conservatory owner and artistic director Barbara Johnson is going outside the realm of classical ballet, which she is best known for. “Our production of Cats will combine elements of jazz, modern dance, classical ballet and tap,” she said. “Although the Conservatory’s forte is classical ballet, we also teach other dance genres.”

Directed by Jim Williams, this Readers Theatre production is actually two separate one-act plays, "All on Account of A Dog" written by Rebecca Saunders and "Not My Cup of Tea" written by A.F. Groff.

Acting Classes Offered at Conservatory
The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre welcomes Linda Donnell as acting instructor. Donnell will teach two classes: Acting for Children (7-9 year olds) and Acting for Middle School Students (10-13 year olds). The classes will meet every Friday starting February 15 and will run for 6 weeks. The Children's Class is from 4:30pm-5:30pm and Middle School students meet from 5:45pm-6:45pm.
In Acting for Children, students will be introduced to the actor's process by training their voice and body to respond in imaginary circumstances through varied warm-up exercises and theater games.

ACT Readers Theatre To Perform
“Anne of Green Gables” November 26 and 29
Alleghany Community Theatre’s next ACT Readers Theatre will be “Anne of Green Gables” scheduled for Monday, November 26 at the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, VA, and Thursday, November 29 in the Alleghany County Library, 122 North Main Street in Sparta. Both performances will be at 7:00 pm.
