Windfows XP Professional SP3 32-bit - Black Edition 2013.2.17

It is not unusual to come upon used machines with a valid Windows Product Key sticker but without installation media. Although Windows XP is approaching end-of-life (April 8, 2014), it should be serviceable for awhile after that date.

http://www.zone54.com has a link to a “torrent” that will download “Windows XP Professional 32 bit SP3 Black Edition”. Microsoft would not enthusiastically endorse this site but with the COA sticker on the case, you could go so far as to put your product key in the computer (utility provided).

Mollum Update - Drush

It was time to do updates on our sister server in Fairfax. Cleaned up appropriate old kernels and started on Drupal. Drush has become a critical tool for working on Drupal installations but we (Drush or me) stumbled on an update to Mollum.

Mollum is a filter which greatly reduces unwanted registration and other mischief. We has been coasting on mollom 7.x-1.1 and Drush was content to let us do that. An upgrade to 7.2.4 became available but drush did not pick it up automatically.

TWR - Access Point's Down

2 Wireless AP's on TWR's Network went down today, this will affect most if not all of our Wireless Customers on WVTF. 2 out of 3 AP's are dead, a field visit would be required to see if the operational access point is visible.

Due to weather and safety concerns the earliest the climber can replace the AP is Friday, but there is slim chance it could happen on Wednesday.

We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience.

Wireless coverage in Grant extended.

High Speed Wireless Internet now available in Wallens Creek area!

Close the door!

The first thing you should do with a Drupal website is close the door. Administer > User Management > User Settings > Only site administrators can create new user accounts.

I waited three days and found my site had hundreds of "users" who had posted hundreds of comments. Google searches our servers every hour or so and any new site will be found by spammers within an hour or two.

Midwinter

The end of the Epoch in the Mayan calendar, the Winter Solstice in our current calendar but not the "first day of winter" in any proper calendar. The confusion results from the innumeracy of confounding period and point values. Events are points and seasons are periods.

That means we are but a scant 6 weeks from Imbolc or the First Day of Spring. The pagans and astrologers get this right and the Christians make amends by celebrating Candlemas the very next day. Conveniently, Candlemas is 40 days after Christmas just in time for the presentation of the baby Jesus at the temple.

Foreboding

I put together a "greener" server. AMD A350, WD "Green" hard drive lots of RAM and little else, installed Ubuntu Server 12.04LTS and somewhat willy nilly checked the box use LVM,(Logical Volume Manager). Several software upgrades went smoothly but then I hit one that brought on feelings of dread. I maintain servers in Galax and Fairfax and this one was in the other place so I postponed the reboot until I could be on-site. In the meantime I had a heart attack and a bypass.

Drupal 6 is back

I wasn't coming up with a suitable replacement so I took the downhill path and put up Drupal 6.
