Recent Windows 10 updates have enabled running bash on Ubuntu on Windows. There are several howtos, the one I happened to use is http://www.howtogeek.com/249966/how-to-install-and-use-the-linux-bash-shell-on-windows-10/. I got "root" as the default user; if you got something else,
lxrun /setdefaultuser should allow you to change to "root".
The Ubuntu version installed is 14.04.5 (cat /etc/issue). You can update with apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Shell commands work (like ssh), "X" commands do not work nor do any other Ubuntu servers. Still trying to get openssh-server to run.
But it is a third of a loaf.
