I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1450 at the recent Pender Flea Market. It is about 7 years old but Garmin graciously offered a firmware update. Garmin wants $90 for lifetime maps for this device so I searched and found newer maps in the 'net. The new map is larger than 2 GB and the 1450 has only 2GB so I searched at Staples for 4GB microsd card. The smallest was 16GB and 'net wisdom is that all Nuvi's will support 8GB. So I went to Microcenter and bought 8GB microsd cards for $6. I stuffed the microsd card into an adapter and plugged it into my Dell Studio, formatted as "FAT". created a directory Garmin and copied the new maps. I plugged the microsd into the Garmin and it was recognized instantly. Apparently, the Nuvi searches the microsd card before loading files from local storage. The old "Favorites" were still there. I was considering an in-dash navigation unit but fortunately the BestBuy option was both expensive (approaching $1000) and it would take 10 days to get the parts. At least for the moment, I am content with my $8 solution. There are lots of widgets to temp me for less.
