Yes You CAN Cook
I was surprised that my intuition was correct: That people during this econcomic downturn were not prepared to cook at home and were turning to fast food. A recent BBC article confirmed this.
However, YOU CAN DO IT.
Cooking at home requires some thought yet allows one to have tasty meals at a fraction of the cost
Cooking at home requires some thought and allows one to have tasty meals at a fraction of the cost.
rice: $15 for 25 lb bag beans: One can cook up 8 cans of beans for the price of one. Tastier too.
bread: $0.50/loaf
chicken: $4.00 for whole chicken.
One can then spin up rich tasting and filling stews, gravies, puddings.
Try to cut down on meat, yet boost protean w/ complementary proteins like rice/beans .. and soy.
Recipies can be found in small books or on the Internet.
Key things that make home cooking easier:
1. crock pot
2. rice cooker
3. glass bowls for storing / plastic sacks work.
4. at least 2 fry pans, at least 2 cooking pots.
5. oven/range or portable oven/burner.
6. microwave.
7. bread machine
Much can be found at thrift stores..
----- Pointer to Reuters's article: LONDON (Reuters) -
Britons are entering the downturn unable to cut household costs because they don't know how to cook cheap meals, turning instead to fast food, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver said Wednesday. Britain is witnessing a "new poverty that we have never seen before," Oliver told parliament's health committee. ... Oliver, who is on a crusade to improve Britain's eating habits, said that in previous downturns households were more equipped to trim costs and still make food "nice and tasty."
