Ubuntu Update

Ubuntu has issued the second "point" release - 10.04.2 for the current LTS (Long Term Support) version. "Point" releases contain all updates up to the date of issue and thus reduce the amount of downloads required after installation. It is a good "conservative" choice for those wanting to try Ubuntu. This is the version we use on our servers and I use on my desktops at home and office.

My newest laptop had driver problems with 10.04 which were worse on 10.10 and now runs the development version of 11.04 happily. There were a few weeks when I had to use ugly and unfriendly workarounds to get things done. Not for beginners. My old laptop runs 10.04.2.

My wife now runs OSX on a MacBook Pro, a gift from my son-in-law. A majority of web developers use Macs mostly because they don't have time for viruses and malware. Ubuntu shares the same relative immunity.

The update burden is significant and dialup users would benefit from access to bandwidth periodically (true for Windows too). With enough interest and cooperation, we could arrange workshops in Galax. CDs are available.
