Ubuntu Installfest

2010/08/21 10:00
America/New York

Checkout the alternative to Windows and Mac OS

Bring your machine or laptop. You can try out Ubuntu with a "live CD" that makes no changes to your hard disk. If you decide to install, we can help you set up a dual boot (whatever you are currently using + Ubuntu) or a Wubi install which installs inside Microsoft Windows. We rarely crash a working system but you should, of course, backup all your personal data (buy an external hard disk).

Doors open at 10:00 AM. No install will begin after 11:00 AM. Even though we will be installing the latest version, we need enough time to perform all the updates and solve installation problems

Coffee, doughnuts and some sort of light grub will be provided.

The event and all materials are free (even the doughnuts).

Oooops. Robbie Williamson <robbie@ubuntu.com> says

We are *REALLY* close to having 10.04.1 ready to go, but it turns out
that releasing 10.10 Alpha 3 last week delayed some of our efforts for
10.04.1.  Thus, we will be shooting for a release next Tuesday (August
17th).  This will give us enough time to have all milestoned fixes
properly in -updates, ISOs correctly sized (they are currently
oversized), and everything tested.

Thank You

Its always good to see the kind folk at ls.net

There were some questions  about documentation for new people.

Here are some places to start:

Soon you too might be searching for articles like these:  (or maybe not)

Installfest report.

  • Custom Intel 3Ghz P4 VIA KM400 chipset, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD. Machine crashed on reboot with overtemperature warning. Found dirty CPU cooler and broken cooler retention bracket. After scrounging used parts box we came up with retention bracket and matching used cooler and got the box running again. But no X. Copied xorg.conf.failsafe to xorg.conf and the X desktop came up on reboot. Added a few modules to get Flash for youtube and Internet radio (VLC) going. Client a bit overwhelmed and we suggested using the "help" button (blue circle with ?) as a guide to exploration.
  • Dell Power Edge server. Uneventful installation.
  • Dell GX150. GUI functional after installing a custom xorg.conf and issuing "killall gnome-panel"
  • Dell Inspiron 6400. Update/upgrade uneventful.
  • ASUS MCP51 deferred waiting for new cooler
  • Intel socket 775 machine deferred also for cooler
  • Acer 17.3 laptop - multimedia tweaks

Overall - successful. Curious number of cooler problems. Second biggest hurdle - GUI on older video chipsets. Next event - Software Freedom Day in September.

Thank you

Thanks for your hospitality and patience today during Ubuntu orientation.  The extra effort by you and your associates with my dirty CPU and cerebellar lag is greatly appreciated as well.  I highly recommend professional direction for a dual-boot project.
