I recently upgraded my workstation monitor with a built-in camera and microphone. The entertainment machine has an external camera and microphone (Logitech, Inc. QuickCam IM/Connect). Both have Google Voice installed and "Hangouts" appears in my tools menu. I normally have Gmail open when I am around, so invitations to video chat should get my attention. Gmail is probably the primary means of contact but a video call may be more effective for complex issues especially when screen sharing will demonstrate a particular problem.
The ground rules:
Privacy. There isn't any. If this sort of communications catches on amongst us, we should consider a third party such as http://jitsi.org.
Security. See privacy. Anything you say or display may be used against you. Be kind.
Seven minute rule. We all have lives other than chatting on a computer. Be prepared for a a hangup any time after seven minutes.
If multiple people want to chat at the same time, I may invite them to join us. There is a 10 user limit for simultaneous connections. If interest focuses on a topic, we may be better off preparing for a web conference.
